Strength and Conditioning Principles Course - Sheffield, UK (Nov 6-7, 2019)

Course will be hosted in the UK at The Foundry Climbing Centre in Sheffield, UK

This will be a two-day clinic discussing strength and conditioning principles and their application to the climbing athlete. The goal is to equip each participant with the basic knowledge on how to use these principles to better program for themselves or their clients. We will discuss how I assess the climbing athlete and how you can use quantitative data to get a better understanding of athlete physiology.

We will discuss the scientific rationale behind my assessment protocol and then run participants through sections of it to demonstrate its application.

The principles we will discuss in the course include: maximum whole body strength, finger strength, contact strength, anaerobic capacity, and local muscular endurance.

Course format – 2 days total: 1.5 day principles/assessment, half-day Blood Flow Restriction

Wednesday - Thursday morning 12 hours approximately

  1. Strength & Conditioning principles

  2. Testing rationale, methodology, and administration.

  3. Tests used and the techniques necessary.

  4. Running participants through the tests to solidify concepts.

Day two: Thursday 6-7 hours

Discussion of test results and how to use those to create programs specific to the individual athlete. We will also cover how to track progression over a cycle for better adaptation and injury prevention. Each participant will get their own customized test results.

  1. How to use the data to create custom programs for each individual

  2. Customized use of data to prescribe workloads and work-rest rationale

  3. How to track program adaptation and fatigue

  4. Program autoregulation for injury prevention

We will finalize the second day by covering the methodology, efficacy, safety, and sports performance applications of blood flow restriction training. This portion will consist of a short (60-minute) didactic section before we get the bands on participants hands and run them through some specific protocols which have been show to improve strength at 20-40% the usual load.
